HLA-AT-A-GLANCE

The Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) genes are those which are responsible for detecting foreign substances and triggering the immune system. Such HLA screening includes the detection of drug molecules, bacteria and viruses as well as the process of self recognition, such as the screening of tumor cells and autoimmunity. HLA variation is, of course, also the basis for organ transplant rejection. As a result, complex HLA genetic testing is now the standard of care for all of transplantation medicine, performed on @100,000 individuals per year worldwide and, as such, is the recognized gold standard for the field of personalized medicine. It has also been widely

The DNA Purification Problem

Applied genetics is unique in laboratory medicine in terms of the extensive sample preparation and subsequent sample QC required before analysis can be initiated. Some estimates suggest that the “DNA purification problem” can contribute to as much as ½ of the time and cost associated with routine genetic testing. gmsbiotech has developed a new technology, coupled to high resolution HLA typing, which completely bypasses DNA purification and quantitation, thus allowing HLA typing directly from raw blood (rehydrated) dried blood spots on Guthrie cards and from raw buccalswabs.  This new, “purification free” approach to HLA typing will be launched as product in early 2011.

Collaborations

gmsbiotech has established several academic and industrial collaborations to apply and validate its patented technology in HLA typing. Based on its central role in vaccination responsiveness, infectious disease susceptibility, inflammatory disease risk and organ or stem cell transplantation, HLA-typing could become the first complex genetic text that is given universally among a healthy population, perhaps at birth. It is the gms mission to enable such population scale HLA-typing, by implementing its low cost microarray technology on raw, unpurified samples such as whole blood, dried blood spots and raw cheek swabs, thus completely bypassing costly and time consuming DNA purification steps.

gmsbiotech welcomes collaborations to accomplish this ambitious goal.

 products

gmsbiotech (gms) has developed a plan to penetrate the new and rapidly growing personalized medicine marketplace, based on the development of its unique micro array technology. The beach-head product in this market is "The HLA Chip" which is based on Human Leukocyte Antigen (HLA) typing: with proven market applications for tissue transplantation and stem cell therapeutics; and early stage but high- growth- potential markets, also based on HLA analysis, for vaccine development, personalized vaccine delivery, personalized treatment for autoimmune diseases (MS, Arthritis), and personalized treatment of microbial infection. Follow-on gmsbiotech products in the personalized medicine market will service chemical therapeutics: especially those applications where personal genetic variation at a number of gene sites can cooperate to alter treatment
